Yes its a type of rose called rosa rugosa
you get it in pink, white and double purple called rosary de lahay

I'm being reliably informed btw, I haven't suddenly become a flower expert Grin

very straight stalks with lots of spikes?

QuintessentiallyOhDear · 03/08/2013 00:25

Trin is right. It is a Rosa Rugosa.

QuintessentiallyOhDear · 03/08/2013 00:29

My parents have the white variety, it is self seeding, and has spread a lot throughout a hill in their garden. The pink variety is also commonly known as Scarbosa.

Ooo these have spring up in my garden too! I just moved to a house with the most amazing garden after a decade in flats and am just loving it far more than I thought I would. I have five proper rose bushes that I am ridiculously proud of Blush

Thanks, Trinity. The purple one's a great colour, isn't it (just googled)? And thanks, Quint, too.

Awkward, we inherited ours too. There's a whole row of them. They're pretty good as they don't seem to need any attention from us at all, unlike the other roses. A bird nests at the end of the row every year, so even though dh hates them, we can't cut them down (phew - I quite like them).

I did spin him a line that they are the original Tudor Rose, from which all modern roses are descended. He views them with slightly less dislike as a result Grin

Well, he could google for himself, couldn't he?

These are lovely roses, above posters are all right, particularly not needing much attention. Our local Tesco has them edging carpark, and plan to look for a seedling sometime, they make a super hedge.
