Can you recommend some flowers to plant from seed that will flower this summer?

V. low budget means that I am limited to seeds this year, but I have some gaps in my flowerbeds and I have given over a couple of beds to the dds to plant things in.

I have got coreopsis, cornflowers and forget-me-not (just what I happened to have in) - what else can I plant at this time of year?

btw am a gardening idiot, so don't ask me things like the ph of my soil etc as I haven't a clue!!

thanks boudica - am a reluctant gardener though so the thought of trawling through there is a little depressing... Blush - just wondered if anyone knew of any good quick growing plants that would give good colourful blooms really?

What about sweet peas or nastrtiams?

jalopy · 11/06/2006 20:46

Honesty. You can dry them out for an indoor display too.

notanotter · 11/06/2006 20:49

sunflowers are best for kids - sprout in days and daily EVIDENT growth!

Miaou · 11/06/2006 22:03

hmmm - don't sweet peas and nasturtiums need a trellis though? Just looking for ground cover on a flowerbed really Smile

Don't ask for much, do I Grin

love-in-a-mist, night scented stocks? or some wild flowers - we've just chucked a mixed packet - poppies, scabious etc about in a corner of our garden
they are selling sweet alyssum for 50p for a tray of 12 at our local garden centre, and they are spreading like billyo

Miaou · 11/06/2006 22:14

mmm that sounds nice mazzy Smile

Nasturtiums make very good ground cover, they don't need to climb. They grow really easily from seed, and will seed down for next year too.

sharklet · 12/06/2006 13:11

I was going to say nasturtiums too - they're strong and will keep flowering rightup until the frosts come! Cheap too!

hermykne · 12/06/2006 13:12

nicotina the tobacco plant is lovely, despite its conoctation!

cupcakes · 12/06/2006 13:13

cosmos grows very quickly and doesn't need staking. Nigella/ Love in a Mist is lovely too.

pesme · 12/06/2006 13:20

another vote for cosmos. v. cheerful. or pop into b&q and raid the 'nearly dying and super cheap' section. normally the plants just need a good water.

Miaou · 12/06/2006 16:03

ooh thanks - have got some nasturtium seed already I think.
