Mid summer equivalent of forget me nots

Do you know what I mean? We have a large, sloping flower bed, in full sun for most of the day.
There's already quite a lot of structural plants in there - red hot pokers and grasses etc.
I want something mid height, self seeding that will grow up around everything like my forget me nots did til last month. Suggestions? (Oh, and no chance of me propagating or doing actual digging etc.)

And there are already poppies in there, but I find them a bit unsatisfying. Over too quickly.

Pot marigolds? The ones in my garden are a cheery bright orange, self seed, and come back year after year. They're just starting to flower now and will continue growing and flowering into autumn.

I agree that poppies are lovely but don't last long enough.

Oooh I like. Much nicer than French marigolds, which I was picturing.

Apparently I'm too late and too early to plant pot marigolds. So they are going in my diary for September. Any other suggestions?

Flat leaf geraniums?
I have bluebells, foret me knots then flat leaf geraniums

stainesmassif · 10/07/2013 07:28

I had some geraniums in there and just pulled them out. The type I have seem to much prefer shady areas, ones in the sun are very sorry looking.

I mean ivy leaf

Rhubarbgarden · 10/07/2013 19:31

Nigella. Self seeds every year and is utterly delightful.

Ooh I like. I'm so disorganised as a gardener. I always want to plant at least two months too late. Or early. Or the time is right but I choose what is effectively slug food. Thanks for the suggestions.

Nasturtiums? Might not be too late for this year.

How about antirrhinum (snap dragons)? You could buy them as bedding plants to give yourself a head start and then they'll seed around if you leave them. They come up all over my garden in loads of different colours and I don't have to do a thing.

stainesmassif · 11/07/2013 18:11

Oh I love snap dragons. They remind me of gardening with my gran many hundreds of years ago. face

Virginia stock- tiny but grows soeasily. If you have dc they will love planting them and seeing them come up so quickly

GrimmaTheNome · 16/07/2013 19:33

My snap dragons never self seed. Envy

I was going to say nigella too. If you wanted something shorter and bright near the front, poached egg plants.

EauRouge · 16/07/2013 20:36

Grimma, if it's any consolation I have killed a thousand lupins since I lived in this house, whereas in my DM's garden they grow like weeds.

Scabious - lovely! Full on flowers which are good for cutting. Also knautia, very similar flowers. Both will self seed in most gardens in sunny spots. If you want something that will grow up through the grasses try verbena bonariensis. Beautiful tall stems with purple heads of tiny flowers which seed everywhere!
