As you lot were so good at identifying my mystery plants last year Grin I have a couple more to challenge you with, anyone want a try?

There should be 4 pics on my profile - the first 2 are of a huge, very green plant with teeny white flowers that appeared in the border. I think it is probably a weed of some sort though, as it isn't particularly attractive and flipping enormous! - nearly as tall as me, and the stems have started falling over now too.

The second two are a different plant, it reminds me a little bit of a heuchera but is not nearly as interesting as most heucheras I've seen, the leaves are fairly plain green and the flowers not very noticeable. It doesn't look as weed-like as the other one, but just a bit big (widthways - it's not particularly tall - knee height at most) and a bit dull, so am wondering whether to keep it or not bother.

Any guesses?

the first two I think are garlic mustard weed

the second two are ground ivy 'creeping charlie'.

WestmorlandSausage · 07/06/2013 00:35

actually on second proper look with my glasses on I dont think it is ground Ivy, not sure it is Mallow either though? hmmm

Ooh you are definitely right about the garlic mustard, well done! Looks like I need to get it out before it seeds everywhere then.

The second one is not mallow though cos I know what that looks like (and it has big flowers, this only has teeny ones which are hanging from a stalk like on heucheras). I don't think it's ground ivy either though, the leaves are bigger (the size of the top of a mug).

I think i've got confused with the second one as I thought the flowers were purple but is that just a bit of colour in the background? don't suppose you could describe the flowers/ buds a bit more or take a closer picture?

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 08/06/2013 00:07

I can try to do a better pic tomorrow maybe... the flowers are quite small and they are in sprays hanging down from a stem which sticks up above the leaves, a little bit like bluebells in the shape of the stem and the cluster of flowers (but more delicate & the actual flowers are differently shaped) or like heuchera flowers. They are slightly bell-shaped with a green sort of cup bit at the top and a spray of tiny whitish petals sticking out below it. There's one stem of them in the middle of the 2nd pic, they are a bit hard to see as they are almost the same colour as the leaves. Ignore the purple, that is some bluebell-type flowers behind it!

The last one is tiarella.

purplewithred · 09/06/2013 09:20

Yup, what Cutted Up says - tiarella. Looks like a big heuchera but looks much more natural.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 11/06/2013 11:25

OK, got an update!

I looked at some pics of tiarella, but the flowers are different. But then we had a day out at a National Trust place over the weekend, and saw some just the same there. So I asked one of the people working there, and I now know it is a Tellima grandiflora or "fringecups"! He says it likes cool moist places normally, which it is NOT getting at the moment (in a relatively sunny and dry border), but it seems to be getting bigger and bigger so must be happy enough there.

So, another mystery solved. Thanks for all the suggestions, right or wrong - they're all good for learning!
