i googled poundland rose bushes and there were pretty decent reviews so i'm hoping its not just a con! but after soaking it in a bucket for an hour, the top branches are still covered in a thick-ish plastic film. why is this?

thanks!

It's probably wax, to prevent the bush drying out. Just leave it, the new growth will punch through it.

oh ok, thank you!

In the last few days I've bought and planted five roses from Poundland, i'm really hoping they grow ok, I can't see anything yet, they just look like twigs!
Has anyone else had much success with them?

Ubermumsy · 02/06/2013 03:15

Are they bare root? Packed up in a bag of dry compost? It's maybe a little late in the year for them now, but keep them well watered (and your fingers crossed!) Can you see any green growth on them at all?

Wait a while. Don't let the compost dry out.

hobbknob · 02/06/2013 11:49

Yes they are bare root. No new growth that I can see. I'll keep watering them and hope for the best.
We just moved from a flat to a house so I'm new to it all!

Watering twice a week should be fine unless it is a terracotta pot in a sunny place leading to water evaporation.

My first thought was 'Have you bought a plastic (imitation) rose?' Grin

I bought 2 fruit bushes from poundstretchers like this, they just sat in their tubs for ages and it's only now after 2 months that I'm seeing any growth on them so be patient! Smile

I googled poundland roses and found that some of them can be a bit useless (the wrong colour, not alive at all) : apparently you should scratch the stem a bit and check it is actually green and alive and not just a dead stick.

hobbknob · 02/06/2013 14:15

Thanks, I will have a look! Can't really go wrong at that price, it's worth the risk.
