I'd like to plant a pyrocantha

I know nothing about gardening

I'd like to plant a pyrocantha as I had one at a rented property and thought it was very pretty.

a) what time of year should I plant it?

b) it's going to be against a fence. Should I therefore make a bed along the fence, or can I just plant it straight into a hole in the grass?

Don't see any reason why you can't put one in now. Make a nice big hole in the grass and add some compost when planting. They can get very big and are very prickly so you'll probably want to keep on top of the pruning to keep it under control.

If you make a hole on the grass, do make it big eg a metre. Grass does strip nutrients from the soil, and eg trees planted in grass tend to grow more slowly.

If you did make a bed, even bit by bit, you could add complementary thins for spring and summer. I am going to make absolutely sure I remove outward growing branches back to 3 or 4 inches, to keep it close to the fence, and tie in the sideways shoots.
