What to plant in small corner in front garden?

We have a small triangle corner of land which currently is bare at the edge of our drive. We had planned to put 2 dwarf apple trees there but subsequently found we can only dig about 5inches before hitting concrete.

So we are now thinking we need to some low level bedding plants to fill the space. Not sure what go for, need inspiration, ideas please!

Can you add soil to increase the depth? You say it's concrete beneath, does moisture drain away or does the patch stay soggy?

If dry, how about adding lots of grit and some broken paving or other flat stones, and planting alpine cover like saxifrage, low growing sedum, maybe cyclamen.

How about a fig? They like root restriction and sun.
Otherwise, alpine strawberries have shallow roots (and an edible crop).
Love-in-a-mist (nigella) is an easy to grow shallow flowering annual that self seeds.

Also, how about thymes? There are a few varieties, and they are evergreen I think.
Aquilegias have a shallow root run too. So do aubretias.

Thanks so much for you suggestions and link, certainly enough to get me started. Unfortunately can't raise the level as it's in line with drive and would look odd.
