Potentially daft question about laying turf...

Our back garden has a small patch of grass, which is a bit raised above the level of the path that runs round it. The path is a horrible, old, cracked concrete thing, and we'd prefer to remove it and just turf the whole area. Speaking to our builders today (we've been having some work done), they suggested we could just turf over the top of the path, without removing it first.

Would this work? It would mean a lot less work if we didn't have to remove the old path,but part of my brain seems to think this wouldn't be a good idea. Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

I wouldn't. I think you'd end up doing the job twice - obviously the turf would be OK initially, but eventually it would fail to thrive and you'd have to start from scratch. Imagine if you were seeding - you'd never think of seeding over a concrete path would you? Obviously you won't have to prepare the ground quite so well for turf, but I think you need to have bare earth.

It's a terrible idea. Clearly your builders don't know anything about turf - whatever you do, don't let them lay it. It needs doing properly. Get a local gardener in to do it who has the skills, tools and experience.
