We've just removed a very old carpet at our new allotment and underneath there were tens of slow worms!!!
What do we do? Can we plant at all in that area? How can we not disturb them?

Wow! I bet someone at Froglife will be able to help you out.

No advice but rather jealous...

Damn wish I had known more about them before then. We had to remove tons of metal and rubbish and only had this one chance to do it. We perhaps should have left the carpet Sad

eaurouge nice to hear from you, I've contacted froglife.

We have loads in our compost heap. They are really lovely. Not causing a problem for us there though, but is there a nearby compost heap or similar that you could transfer them too? They don't seem to mind being handled.

Doh, I didn't even look at the username on the OP! How are you getting on? Other than being up to the eyeballs in slow worms Grin

phylisdoris Lucy you! We went back today and covered the area again, lots were really tiny and we should have just rolled the carped back down straight away but I didn't know much about them. Hopefully they'll be fine. Well check again next spring and plan to build something for them just next to that bit (not sure if compost or a rockery or what).

eau yes we are fine! P is huge and lots of work fun; how are you?
