Herb Garden

Has anyone planted a successful herb garden? Or anyone got any tips for what works best and which herbs are the most useful.

I have a nice spot that I thought would be perfect for some herbs, near the kitchen back door.... but gardening isn't my strong point!

we grow rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano and bay. all very low maintenance.

I don't grow mint (too invasive and only a short harvesting season, coriander ( short season) or parsley ( short season again)

If you want mint, grow it in pots or it will take over your garden!

iota · 22/03/2006 16:42

I did try growing it in pots - but it died from lack of watering

iota · 22/03/2006 16:44

and I always have a pot of basil on the kitchen windowsill

I grow my mint (three types) in buckets sunk into the garden - stops the invasive roots but solves the watering problem.

bluesky · 22/03/2006 18:54

thanks for the mint tip, I love mint in the summer, for potatoes, drinks etc. The buckets sunk into bed is a great idea.

Can basil grow outside, or is it a windowsill thing? I manage to kill the supermarkets pots of it quite rapidly.

I have never had any luck with basil either Sad

MrsMuddle · 22/03/2006 20:55

I bought lemongrass seeds. Has anyone had any luck with them?

jmg1 · 22/03/2006 21:00

I grow:

parsley. oregano, coriander, mint, basil, dill and thyme.

Basil is the trickiest, it does not like the cold

I find Parsley is the most used

bettythebuilder · 22/03/2006 21:17

Basil is definitely best indoors on the window sill(at least, here in the North of England!)
In my outdoor herb garden I have thyme, (which I use a lot as it lasts all year round) a small bay "tree" (also useful all year), sage, and in 'summer' I add mint (grown in plastic flower pots sunk in the bed), chives, and parsley.
I only have a tiny space for herbs, but it's anazing what can be grown, and I love popping out to get herbs to add to stock, or shove in a chicken!

busybaby · 22/03/2006 22:19

We grow all our own veg. and herbs. Rocket is also a good one for growing outside - again a pot might be an idea if you've got limited space.

The key with basil is a fairly constant temperature as well as it not liking the cold.

I grow rosemary, bay, thyme, marjoram ,oregano, chives, garlic chives, sage, mint (in bottomless buckets), lemon balm (in bucket, fennel and lovage. THe only one I don't use is the lemon balm - but it smell wonderful and ds likes sniffing it!
I use rosemary and bay the most. I really liked the chervil I tried growing last year....
Coriander is always infested with greenfly when I grow it. Basil does well in the greenhouse.

brimfull · 22/03/2006 22:48

apparently the trick with basil on the windowsill is to only water when it's really dry and wilting.

monty don say soWink

bettythebuilder · 23/03/2006 09:41

I wish all plants were like that, I'd be a master gardener.Smile

bluesky · 23/03/2006 09:53

thanks everyone, donk that is a very impressive list. Right I shall try and get the hang of basil indoors or greenhouse. Parsley in the buckets. Am definitely going to try rocket as ds1 loves it, and recently when we've been out for meals, the in thing seems to be rocket salad with shavings of parmesan and balsamic vinegar - delicious!!

You should grow roesemary because it is a shrub and such low maintenance. It is really easy and smells nice if you walk into it.

brimfull · 23/03/2006 11:54

lol at bozza walking into rosemary bushesSmile

Bozza · 25/03/2006 12:07

Well I sort of meant walk by it, but given where I have planted mine far too near the edge of the path there is some truth in it. Smile

What herbs can I put outside NOW that will survive our summer? First time in this area MNs but think I´m getting in to this gardening lark (tho only have a balcony!) I generally kill all herbs on the windowsill so should be v low maintenance!
