How do you store veg peelings etc before it goes in the compost bin?

My dh currently has bags full of rotting vegetable matter just outside the back door. Angry
I refuse to put them in the compost bin because it's quite a long way away, the veg matter is quite far gone and also things fly at me when I open the lid of the compost bin.

I've yet to find a satisfactory way of storing compost before it goes out as it starts to smell really quickly.

Any ideas?

spidermama - look at my q on kitchen composting thingy - might be your answer. not sure - am still waiting to see if anyone uses one

lakeland :) little ceramic bin that sits on our bench top it has a carbon filter in the lid which stops it from ponging, fill it and leave it until it needs to go outside :)

We've got a thing from Lakeland - stores quite a bit. But taking it to composter is not one of my jobs. I decided that.

Ours is green plastic, not ceramic, that sounds quite posh.

It sounds like one I had. If it's a white ceramic thing shaped like a dustbin then I had one but they're tiny so I gave it to my mum.

Where did you get your green plastic one Tinker and how big is it?

we bought a terribly tasteful cream ceramic compost crock. It looks like a miniature dustbin, and has holes in the lid and a carbon filter thing fitted inside.

Actually, it looked terribly tasteful on the pages of Country Living or wherever it was I spotted it. Now its in my kitchen I'm not absolutely certain it isn't just a bit...

twee.

And I just did some roasted vegetables for the kids' tea, and it wasn't big enough to hold all the peelings.

Think the bag of rotting vegetable matter outside the back door sounds a better idea, on reflection.

(Glad to hear the wedding was good, BTW. Are you feeling a bit emotionally and physically hung-over?)

We got ours from the council, along with the compost bin. All for free!
