My friend and I are planning on setting up our own landscape gardening business. We currently do the job but for someone else and want to branch out on our own. We're not particularly interested in the weeding/hoeing/mowing/planting etc but do more of the manual stuff like decking, fencing, hedge trimming, tree cutting etc and would like a name for our company. My friend has suggested 'Landscaping Ladies' but I think it sounds a bit woolly. We dont want to go down the 'lady gardeners' route for obvious misinterpretation. Does anyone have any magical suggestions?

Wow, am amazed at the suggestions. I like Roots as nice and simple although people might think we are a hairdressers! I did consider a plant name but eventually came up with Garden Graphics and my friend decided upon The Little Garden Company which for me is far too much of a mouthful. Am in very awkward position anyway as currently work as a Landscape Gardener for a friend who's wife I know very well and who are part of my main circle of friends. I introduced a friend of mine 6 months ago who started working with us and she has now decided to jump ship and set up her own rival business and wants me to join her. If I do I will obviously make more money but would have to shaft my current boss/wife and associated friends to set up a rival competition. I know I could do it as I have all the skills needed but I need to weigh it up against my current fairly cushy stress free job. What to do but anyway, thanks for all the suggestions, will bear all in mind just in case.

Hi DP has a garden centre and landscape business. it has a very normal professional sounding name. ithibk this is a plus point beause people pay alot for landscaping services and IMHO the more prof the company sounds the better perceived you ar by potential clients.

I feel that sometimes 'themed names' can sound a bit gimmicky, rather than calling yourself something relating to the fact that your both women, why dont you use that aspect of your business for p.r and marketing, a couple of free piesces of editrial in the local press.

Failing that you could always call youselves the 'bush babes' (god i am hideous at thinking of names as you can tell)

Good luck with the venture

Oh gosh and dont worry about the shafting thing, plenty of people have learnt their trade from our company and gained quals courtesy of us and jumped ship. No hard feelings business is business

Mirage - sorry not in your area as am based Surrey/Berkshire borders. You should seriously consider doing lawns and hedges etc as there is a shed load of money to be made. Mowing and strimming are fairly tedious but something most people want but dont discount hedge trimming as it brings in the most cash and they are very simple to do. My friend and I are going to do a one-day course at a local college to fine tune our fencing/decking and patio skills so it could be worth checking it out locally where you are. The more strings to your bow etc although you are probably far more horticulturally minded than I am. I can just about tell my Phormium from my Fatsia!

trifle - if you are in this area I may know someone who wants a patio laid....

Cece - where abouts is the patio job. We tend to do all the preparation/ground work and get our builder (who is an accredited member of the Master Builders Guild) to come and do the final slab laying. Unfortunately he is booked up until May but would be happy to take a look.
