Should I make my own compost-had bad experience with mice!!!

I attempted to make my own compost once in a large bin (as advised by my husband's nan who makes her own). One day I went to chuck some old twigs in there and a mouse jumped out!!!
I heard a noise and started emptying it only to find some new born babies in there!!!

Since then, I've been buying it in bags but I always hear it's not as good.

Would I be able to make some without the risk of mice and my daughter getting her grubby little mitts into it?

Yes. I once caught a tiny glimpse of a mouse so whenever I go to put stuff in it, I always stomp up to the bin and then bash the side of it. Poor little baby mice. It is nice and warm in there. Just make sure you only put veggie scraps in - no meat, oil, carbs etc.

I once had a mouse jump out too.
That was in a large segmented bin. I now use the black compost bins that the council provides free of charge and I've had no problems.
You can put chicken wire underneath the bis to stop them burrowing in.
