Help! How and when do I transplant the ancestal peonies?

I love gardens but have little knowledge or liking for actual gardening. However, we are moving soon and I can't possibly leave behind the ancestral peonies (originally my great grandfather's from his Durham garden, they moved with my family to Berkshire, then Cheshire, then Teesside.)
So, how, when, please?
Thanks

I have always heard that peonies don't like being moved but yours clearly are very robust. Anyway, as ever the RHS offers advice. I wouldn't worry unduly if you have to move the plants before the autumn, as the current low temperatures might fool the plant into thinking it is autumn!

They will be fine if you dig them up with some soil attached. Dump them into big flowerpots or strong plastic sacks with the tops rolled down. Add a bit more garden soil to keep them snug. Remeber to keep them watered while you wait to replant. The important thing is not to plant them too deeply when you put them back in the ground: just the same depth as they were before.
