Leylandii in pots??

Never thought I would post a message about leylandii, but I desperately need something very very quick growing to screen off my nosy neighbour's conservatory that she uses to spy into our garden. Will leylandii grow in pots and if so what size pot should I put them in? I can't plant direct into the groudn as I don't want to be liable for root damage to the godforsaken bloody hellspawn conservatory. I need them to get to around 2.5 m so I don't mind if the pots restrict their growth a bit. Is this feasible?

Also, can you suggest any alternatives for this?

Many thanks!

They wont be too happy and will have slow and restricted growth but you could probably get them to around 2.5 metres if you planted them in a large enough pot.

Would not a trelis with some honeysuckle or fast growing clematis look nicer and do the same job?

Why do you care about her looking into your garden? I'm genuinely interested to know. Are you doing something particularly interesting in there?

OhWesternWind · 10/07/2012 16:52

Thanks for the suggestions - I don't know that clematis/honeysuckle would do as it is a bit shady in this area - she has built the conservatory right on the boundary, so there is one side that's her conservatory wall/windows, one opposite that is my kitchen wall and these are joined by my bedroom wall/window. So not only can she see into my garden she can see right into my house, and the other way round. She has put film on some of her windows but not all of them so she can still see in when she wants to. I know this is against building regs but I don't want to report her and stir up more trouble, I just want to block off her view and I thought some plants would seem less confrontational than putting up a fence in front of her windows which is my other option.

She is generally nosy and looks through to see what we are doing and she has been making trouble about what goes on in my garden - nothing exciting but I keep hens and she has been nosying round about them and has complained to the council about them as it is pretty muddy in all this incessant rain. Not that this has anything to do with her or her garden but I am fed up with this kind of nonsense and trouble-making and I would just like to block her off so she can't see what we are up to any more.

She's broken building regs and reported you to the council? Cheeky bitch. Shock How about some box instead? You could clip it into the shape of a cock then.

Or maybe some ivy in one of those troughs with a trellis on the back? That grows quickly and doesn't mind shade. You could plant something prettier in front of it, maybe some ferns or something.

You can get some fast growing clematis that will grow in shade and if you mix it with some honeysuckle the bees will love it so you guarantee she will keep her windows shut on your side.

Cut to the chase. Dob her in on building regs. She's already complained to the council about your chooks.

AND build the fence while it's all being sorted out.

You seem to be afraid of what she MIGHT do when she has already been out of order. Nothing will stop her being a pain in the arse, so you might as well protect yourself. Don't think of it as making trouble: SHE has made trouble.

Sorry about the shouty capitals.

Try walking around naked. You may get an interest.

TonTonMacoute · 22/03/2024 14:36

You can get both clematis and honeysuckle that will grow in shade. You can also get trellis with a sort of fake leaf cover, which will block her view in the meantime.

Wigelia and buddleia are also two shrubs which will grow up very quickly.

BarrelOfOtters · 22/03/2024 14:44

Report her. But build a fence if you won't report her.

Otherwise I'd say bamboo in big pots or troughs rather than leylandii. Or photinia is evergreen and does ok in pots.

I think the leylandii as planting wouldn't work - they'd outgrow the pots really quickly.

Or put up fake ivy on trellis.

It's been 12 years. Hopefully they've sorted it out or even moved house since then.

And the leylandii are now thirty metres tall. 😂

A large phallic shaped clipped box sounds like the perfect solution 😂

Alternatively, bamboo in troughs would work.
