I am no gardener but have read that virgina creeper is hardy and a prolific creeper. I wanted it to grow and cover a hideous wall (well away from windows etc). I had thought i would be having to cut back strands on an almost daily basis in an attempt to contain it. However am not having this experience.
I bought it as a bunch of sticks from the garden centre in Oct 2010, spring/summer 2011 it did sprout a bit, approx 30cm away from main stem and some leaves were present which turned the lovely red colour in autumn.
I researched and saw that it said it may sulk the first year, but watch out for the 2nd year, so i had high hopes this year.
It has spouted again but looks the same as it did last year, it isn't growing anymore in my opinion. It has started to look a little withered also. I resorted to giving it some miracle grow this weekend - wasn't expecting that with a virginia creeper.
It is supposed to thrive anywhere??!!
Admittedly it is in a fairly clay soil, but it has got compost/grit around it also.
Am i doing something wrong or not doing something i should?
I'm tempted to go back to the garden centre and ask/negotiate that they replace with an established plant as i can't help but think my bunch of sticks in 2010 were duds. Any advice?!

I can't help much but I've got two Virginia Creeper Henryana plants and both went mad last year after I planted them but were off to a very slow start this year. I've only just got some leaves on mine in the last few weeks at the bottom of the plant. My mum has said the same about her creepers so whether it is something to do with the weather? I've got a clay soil as well so wondered whether they were a bit waterlogged with all the rain as they prefer a light/well drained soil ideally.
