but it would have to be planted in a big pot.

Possible?

And would a nice smelling rose grow in a big pot and ramble up the front? Would it need a trellis?

Or something else?

A rose would cope with a very big pot and good quality compost (not multi-purpose) but you would need to fix trellis or similar for it to climb up.

You could add a honeysuckle or a clematis, too.

Would it need repotting or just feeding?

If you plant it in John Innes No3, you can feed it and then every year scrape out the top few inches of compost and replace it. You don't need to repot unless it's outgrown the old one.

That said, a free root run is always better than being in a pot. Have you got no ground near the front of the house into which you could plant it?

No i think theres concrete under a gravel bit. Maybe i should dig a bit and investigate.

What roses smell delicious but are idiot proof?

Have a browse through the David Austin and Peter Beale websites. They give descriptions including how fragrant they are. They also state how disease and pest resistant they are too. Only thing is, at this time of year you will only be able to buy container roses. Bare root roses are only available to plant from about November - March. So, if you want something now your choice will be much more limited.
