Hi gardeners, my DD has decided that carrots is what we are planting in the veg patch this year. I have read on the packet that the soil needs to be fine and stone free and not recently manured..... I'll have to get the sieve out, and am planning to put in some well rotted leaf mould....is that any better than manure though? I am grateful for any input on mulch/ any other carrot tips. ta.

Hi, what effect would recently manured soil have on carrots? I have sowed carrots with DS but have since read that they shouldn't be sewn in soil that has been manured in the past year which our bed has. I let DS choose what he wanted & carrots was what he came up with! Thanks

We grow them in old buckets. Perfect dept, just make a few holes in the bottom.

I think manure is supposed to make them fork. But I'd just go for it anyway and see what happens. Mine have been fine in the past in similar soil.

Manure makes them fork, as do stones. Compost is good though. Home-made if possible or something like Vitalearth veg compost.
Make a little trench 2" deep and sprinkle compost into it then sow the seed into that. Will help them get a good start.
A sprinkle of Blood, fish & bone natural fertiliser on the soil beforehand is good too.
