Building a raised bed

What's the best way to build a raised bed using wood and where do I get it from?

4pcs 22 stakes 8in plus the point,
4pcs 2ft
4in pressure treated planks,
4pcs 4ft*4in pressure treated planks, 32pcs 2in galvanised screws.
Assemble it upside down on a level surface (pointy ends of the stakes upwards), two screws in each plank end, two planks height, then turn it over.
You can get all these things from any DIY store.

My dad built one for me in 1970 something. He built two large wardrobes iirc and the bed was one top between them made of planks. My bed was v cool!

jimjams this thread is in gardening, it's about raised flower beds not beds for sleeping in.

Grin jimjams

Oh my raised beds aren't as posh as inmy's. Do the trick though.

I didn't realise there was a class war WRT raised bedsBlush
It just seemed the logical way to reconcile the height difference between the lawn and patio.
Making it upside down means the top is level, and makes the spikes easier to drive into the ground.
How do other people make theirs?

CuriousMama · 21/05/2012 08:50

I wasn't trying to be funny just saying I'm a novice and mine aren't that good. Yours sound great inmysparetime. I just make mine out of what's lying around in the allotment or can pick up, I just recycle. In an allotment it doesn't matter what it looks like though does it?

I think perhaps I did not give correct details. It's going to be about 8' long x 2' wide x 2' high.

2' is quite high for a raised bed, you'll need a lot of compost to fill it!
Make it the same as previous, bolting two 4' beds together (8' is too far to bridge with planks), using 5 layers of 4" planks, at least an inch thick to cope with the weight, and keeping the spikes a good 8" long for stability.
