Readers' Roses: The Rose appreciation and ideas thread

I realise many of us appreciate a beautiful rose. I thought it would be nice to share our ideas here. I've no one to talk to about roses at home. My poor DH rolls his eyes (though he does his best to hide it) when I start to talk about them. It'd be lovey to talk to others who would like to grow/ talk about roses.
Is there anyone there?

The fairy looks lovely but its not that one, its a darker cerise pink. I see it scrambling wild through hedges round here and its the sort of thing you see in neglected gardens and around old ruins. Its very vigourous and takes from cuttings really easily. Its not scented but I still like it.

You've reminded me, I really should give all mine a feed and a mulch.

Maytree the Alnwick rose is beautiful and lovely scent. I'm hoping that as it matures it will become a bit more sturdy. Also I live in west Wales and we do get a lot of rain which bows the flowers down if they are very full.

Noticed the first little cluster of buds on one of my ramblers today Smile

loving this thread!!!! roses are my actual favourite thing in the world. favs are sweet avalanche but don't think you can grow them here, am I right? they were my wedding flowers and now get them from the florist on my anniversary but would love to be able to grow them...

marshmallowpies how long did your albertine take to grow to any decent height. I go and talk to mine everyday (woohoo weirdo over here Hmm) so just wondering how long I will need to keep that up as she's getting nice and leafy but no real height as yet....I've promised DH that the trellis will be COVERED by the end of the summer!

also, I have a tree that is basically disgusting but gives us the only shade/ privacy we have at the bottom of the garden. can anyone recommend a rose that might like to climb (quite quickly) up it despite the roots being completely shaded??? a tough one I feel.....

Try Rosa Filipes Kiftsgate' for your tree. It's pretty rampant. Make sure you dig a good hole whatever the rose, fill it with well rotted manure or compost, dust with blood, fish and bone and water in well. You will need to give it a bucket of water regularly, feed it well for at least the first two years and then annually after. Give your Albertine a good feed too and she'll grow for you.
