What do I do with my babies?

I'm bit by bit starting to learn about vegetable gardening. This year's newbie is onions. I planted seeds in a plastic covered germinating thingy that sits on the windowsill. They've germinate Shock. (I'm always pretty amazed and disbelieving when something actually comes up). What do I do now? At the moment they just look like long strings of green cotton. Very fragile looking. Do I take the plastic top off or do I leave it on? I don't think they're anywhere near ready to go in the ground.

I am quite a beginner too, but in GW Carole Klein was saying that once a seed's first true leaves come up, prick them out into a larger pot. Are you talking just about your onions or everything? Then in a few weeks they can go into the ground.

Just the onions. I also plant potatoes, peas and turnips but they go straight into the soil. I started growing stuff 4 years ago and add one new thing each year. Otherwise I get overwealmed and let everything die.

Me too idontwanttobefat

So what do you do with your babies when you're gardening? The 2 year old gets stuck in and undoes most the good I've done but the 8mth old is a problem

I tie mine to fence, but that's because they are of the furry woofy type.

Yes, take the plastic top off once they've germinated and just watch them grow for a bit until you judge that they're big enough to pot on or plant out etc.

Thank you.
