We're moving into a house with a garden next week.

It is rented so we won't be able to actually plant IN the garden, but we can in pots etc.

I have hever ever done it before. Is it possible?
If so, what is likely to be successful for a novice and how do I go about it?

Many tia

Pretty much every plant I look at withers and dies BUT last year we grew peas quite succesfully in a big tub.

Are you sure you can plant in the garden? I rent and totally ripped up the weedy border so I could grow stuff. Landlady didn't seem to object. I grew cabbages, lettuces and french beans in that bit. You could also grow tomatoes in grow bags or a hanging basket?

Oooooh peas!

DS has brought home a beanstalk from school. It is currently thriving on the window sill with random watering but nit sure what ti do next. There doesn't seem to be much soil in the yoghurt pot.

As for your garden, you can grow outdoor tomatoes in growbags - a good way to do this is to cut the bag in half and prop each half on its end. It's a little messy to cut it up though. You can also grow runner/french/borlotti beans and peas/mangetout in a growbag like this but you will need some canes in a tripod for support.
I grow lots of rocket, spinach and lettuce leaves on my windowsill as they germinate really easily and grow well.
Peppers are harder to grow outside as they like a bit of heat. Herbs are good to have in pots, if you don't want to sow them just buy a small pot of herbs and plant up, the ones in the supermarket don't have very good roots, a garden centre would be better.
HTH, not sure if you have preference. You can grow almost any veg in a pot but they do like different conditions so do a little research beforehand.
