So i wont be growing courgettes this year as they took over my whole patch Grin, paea went well last year so will be growing them again.

So i will be growing, peas (2 lots), spring onions and lettuce in my big patch. Strawberries in tubs, runner beans (not sure where they are going yet) and am thinking potatoes but notsure how yet. I like the look of the potato bags, are they any good?

So what will you be growing?

I've gone back to work, given up my allotment so I just have veg patch at home now. So this year its all very, very low maintenance:

  • Raspberries - summer and autumn
  • Blackcurrants
  • Gooseberries
  • Potatoes
  • Strawbs (in strawb pot )
  • Tomatoes ( in growbags )
  • Salad leaves
  • Herbs - coriander, basil (indoors), dill, plus perennials
  • Chillis (in pots )

We are growing tomatoes again this year and strawberries as the DD's loved these last year. Also trying mange tout, Brussels sprouts, spinach' basil and squash. I'm using grow bags in our front yard which is south facing.

Our back garden faces north and comes under regular fox attack so I'm relegating this more to a play area for the DD's. They are pestering for a climbing frame...

Also got a half price gooseberry bush in Sainsburys so this is in a pot outside the front door.

Feel a bit over ambitious now I've written this all down!

survivingspring · 04/04/2012 21:26

Wow you lot are adventurous! I've gone for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers so far in my greenhouse. I don't have a raised bed yet but looking forward to making room for one this year so I can try growing more veg. I also have a gooseberry bush in the garden but the birds stripped them all last year before I could get any fruit off it!

We have a full allotment, in year 5 now. We are growing everything you can think of and a few you might not. Some of our more esoteric crops are okra, physalis, wild strawberries, cardoon. New seeds this year are tomatillos, brukale, violet artichokes and parsnips (I know ! Never grown them before..)

I also have a long term project growing asparagus from seed.

OhdearNigel · 05/04/2012 23:01

Forgot to say that the only thing I'm not regrowing this year is asparagus peas - very disappointing.

Am currently trying to decide whether to buy some samphire seeds (we live on the coast)

frenchfancy · 06/04/2012 07:11

Potatoes (just earlies this year)
carrots
lettuce
garlic
onions
french beans
sugar snap peas
tomatoes (about 20 different [bublush])
courgettes
cucumbers
butternut squash

also planning peppers and aubergines but haven't got them yet

Full fruit garden includes raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries, red, white and blackcurrants, gapes and a small kiwi.

slowburner · 06/04/2012 19:12

We are in rental and may move at any time so I am sticking to;

tumbling tomatoes in hanging baskets
Patio courgettes in tubs
B'nut Squash in tub
Globe carrots in tubs
A salad rocket garden in tubs.

bettythebuilder · 06/04/2012 19:58

tomatoes, chillis and peppers in the greenhouse- I never have much success with peppers, but keep trying anyway, toms and chillis are always good.

It's my second year of having a raised bed for veg, will be growing onions, courgettes, leeks, green beans and mange tout- they were all good last year. I also managed to grow a pumpkin last year (just the one!) so I'll have another go at that.
Carrots and parsnips in tubs.
Salad stuff was also successful last year- in the raised bed and also a container near the back door- mixed, cut and come again salad leaves, rocket, spinach, radishes and spring onions.
new challenges for this year are cauliflower, aubergine and cucumber.
I have plenty of herbs established (sage, parsley, rosemary, bay, thyme, chives) and I'll grow basil and dill on the windowsill.
I've got a couple of alpine strawberry plants which produce a good crop- the little strawberries seem to be too small and well hidden by the leaves for the birds to get to them!

littleducks · 06/04/2012 20:09

Im also in a rental with a large patio, did some veggies last year but am obv mostly restricted to tubs. It didnt go great last year, garden far shadier than i realised.

Any tips?

And to whoever up the thread was interested in potatoe bags, we got some in poundland last year and they worked well

Dawndonna · 07/04/2012 16:02

Cucumber,
Spinach.
Romanescu (the lime coloured one)
Have also purchased and planted a dwarf Apple and Cherry.

OhdearNigel · 10/04/2012 22:56

I heart poundland, little ducks - it's fab for garden supplies and an easy walk from my house to top up compost

Kveta · 12/04/2012 11:07

plums (tree planted last year, and very flowery this spring! so we are hopeful :))
raspberry canes planted, but shouldn't get anything off them this year
blueberries
tomatoes if they ever bloody germinate (got seed mats from Suttons and 6 weeks on they have done FUCK all, I am so annoyed.)
carrots
parsnips (as with tomatoes)
potatoes in bags
beetroot
spinach
radishes
spring onions
spinach
lettuce
strawberries

have planted some savoy cabbage and globe artichoke seeds, and live in hope.

I want some celeriac seeds too, so will go in search of them this weekend. And next year I want a cherry tree in the front garden, but will need to stop being heavily pregnant and able to dig over the front a bit first!

Last year the courgettes took over the garden, but this year the seedlings are not doing well, so not sure I can plant them out. We'll see.

rhihaf · 12/04/2012 11:45

Have also bought potato bags from Poundland, planted my second earlies (charlotte) yesterday ... we are quite a bit later with everything up here in the wild west of Wales!

What is everyone's fave maincrop potato variety?

Otherwise am growing:
cut and come again salad leaves (from a cut-and-eat pack in Lidl, 99p)
rainbow chard
rocket (survived the winter and seems even better than last year!)
garlic (again, from lst yr, thought they'd rotted but they came up after Christmas!)
peas
outdoor cucumbers
beetroot
pak choy
carrots
purple sprouting
various herbs
spring onions
