I can't identify that Grin. But google alliums - something like that should pop up. The blues - a nice agapanthus?

PrisonerOfWaugh · 02/04/2012 17:42

I'd say it isn't a real plant,
but Honesty Plants are similar, something like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=coin+plant&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1280&bih=685&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=-f67IanmQsGo-M:&imgrefurl=www.fell2earth.com/jigsaws/2011/coin_plant_intro.html&docid=w_rnG-BB9qUzBM&imgurl=fell2earth.com/puzzles/2011/coin_plant.jpg&w=320&h=480&ei=UNZ5T8WXB8OE8gOSxu2RDQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=524&vpy=120&dur=1512&hovh=275&hovw=183&tx=95&ty=145&sig=109806528314826933236&page=1&tbnh=156&tbnw=108&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this or <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=honesty+plant&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1280&bih=685&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=6m_Labuqy5hQNM:&imgrefurl=linuxsoftware.co.nz/blog/tag/pub&docid=UqfACz6xoHANbM&imgurl=linuxsoftware.co.nz/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/honesty.jpg&w=220&h=330&ei=odZ5T72LKdTx8QOhu6DADQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=402&vpy=289&dur=1108&hovh=264&hovw=176&tx=120&ty=129&sig=109806528314826933236&page=1&tbnh=153&tbnw=105&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this

agapanthus

threeleftfeet · 02/04/2012 17:55

Ooh they're all great thanks so much :)

It doesn't matter if it's not a real plant, thankfully, - it's for a design project. Examples of anything like it are great for inspiration.

Mumsnetters = better than google, it's official Grin

Ooh that's interesting FloridPayolas!

This makes me smile, not quite sure why Tapestry album cover of band called hemlock

VerityClinch · 02/04/2012 20:46

Holy crap at the hemlock. It looks just like cow parsley. We have "cow parsley" in our garden. What are the chances....

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/04/2012 21:25

Verity - Do you know what the plant is? Some umbellifers are, like hemlock, highly toxic.

clippityclop · 02/04/2012 21:31

Looks like an image of the the seed head of an agapanthus to me. Really lovely, easy to grow in a bed or a big pot, blue, white and I think there's a bi-colour one now.

threeleftfeet · 02/04/2012 22:07

Verity I remember my parents warning me very sternly to stay clear of plant which looked like that when I was little.

Like you I never knew it could be hemlock! And i'd forgotten about it until now.

I wonder if any other dangerous plants could be right under my nose without me realising it?

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/04/2012 22:10

Threeleftfeet - If you post pics of any plants you're not sure about on the Come into the garden with Maud thread, MN's gardening obsessives will try to identify them. Alternatively, you could take a leaf sample into any reputable garden centre.

threeleftfeet · 02/04/2012 22:11

clippityclop oh the seed heads. That makes sense thanks.

OP posts:
VerityClinch · 03/04/2012 06:37

It had kind of died and dried out (like, brown and crispy) - we've only just moved in - and the gardener has cut it down now but I shall certainly be keeping an eye on it!

clippityclop · 03/04/2012 13:35

Is there any sign of foliage? If it is agapanthus it'll have long, slim, bright green blade like leaves coming through now. Dies back at the end of the summer but the seed heads remain upright and dry out as you describe and are good to leave alone as they give a bit of structure during the winter months. Eciting time of year in a new garden, who knows what'll turn up!

HettyKett · 06/04/2012 07:53

Saw these and though of your project.
