Hi

I have my first garden and my stepson and me want to put a flower bed in.

The garden doesn't get alot of sun and any it does get will be gone by about 11am everyday.

Any advice on plants that don't mind not getting the sun. We would like flowers to brighten the place up.

Also i don't really know where to begin so any advice on creating a flower bed from scratch would be great too

Thanks

Hello, is it wet or dry? Will make a difference to what will survive!

3teenhell · 28/03/2012 08:41

Two of the best plants for dry shade are foxgloves and lily of the valley, but they are both toxic. Am I right in thinking that your children are teenagers and therefore unlikely to be eating the garden plants?

Aquilegia, alchemilla mollis and pulmonaria are also good for shade, but the pulmonaria may struggle if it is too dry. You could dig in some compost to improve the social and help it retain moisture.

Some more suggestions from the RHS

Yes all but one is a teen, the youngest DSS is 6, so think he should be beyound the eating plants stage. I love lilly of the valley so will look for some of those.
I intend to dig in some compost anyway to help the soil a bit so will have a look at the otheres now as well.

Thanks for your help. I really want a nice garden just no idea what i am doing!!

Improve the soil! Bloomin' spellchecker.

Dry shade is a bugger. I have never done very well with this type of soil- tend to put in shrubs which can tolerate it - not many flowers like these conditions.

Maud's suggestions are good.

ok thank you.
Am looking forward to getting started now.
