I'm very new to gardening and have never dug a bed in my life until toda
y. Ive got a lovely raised patch in my garden surrounded by brick which i thought would be ok for potatoes or carrots. But when i started digging I found so many stones big and small. ive removed loads and now have a nice big pile of stones but there are still loads left big and small. Its very disheartening. I'm going to sound stupid but are stones normal in soil Confused. Will i have to get rid of all the stones before I can plant any veg?

Thanks

Sounds like hardcore! ( used to raise things and to set a base for top.soil to go onto) not sure about growing root veg in tho, may make them grow funny. The best and easiest way to grow potatoes is planting them straight into the compost bag itself! easy and no pests!

ah the hardcore thing makes sense. The garden itself is on a different level to the house and it looks like this particular patch has been raised and hardcore put in to make it level.

15 years ago apparantly my garden was lovely and level and full of flowers veg etc but the council have used it as a dumping ground for thier crap when they did up the prefabs (which is what my house is) and now the garden is terrible. I'm quite disapointed as I had hopes of being able to grow all sorts out there this year.

I am definately going to try the compost bags instead, sounds like a good idea.

Hmmmmm...nice council! Dnt let it stop ur green fingeredness tho! Maybe try something that grows "up".rather than "down", like peas! strawberries, blackberries, any soft fruit will grow fine too (depending on the level of sunlight) I do a lot of growing but I never plant Into the ground. Strawberries grow great in hanging baskets and they drain better too (they hate to much water ) tomatoes grow fab in empty bean cans!
The potato compost bag btw, simply cut small slits all.the way down it.and shove them in!done! Hope that helps!

thanks for advice, I will try that. It never would have occured to me to grow peas soft fruit etc in the patch. I think I had my heart set on potatoes and carrots and never considered anything else but I will try the compost bag and have a rethink about my little patch. I will also try the bean tins for the tomatoes!

I'm getting a bit confused about types of compost though, Do I need to mix it with manure? i bought some some chicken poo pellets from wilkinsons yesterday, can I use that?

No problem!happy to help! As for the compost,im abit lazy really, just Buy normal compost bags,i personally never bothered with manure or anything but for a bed,it wouldnt harm it!esp if ur soil isnt perfect!
