Need a flowering evergreen climber, clematis? Anything more interesting?

I'm looking for an everygreen climber to go next to our front door. Quite like this but it flowers for such a short time, and I've seen a couple of other evergreen clematis but they're quite small.

Any suggestions for ones that are 2m+ tall, evergreen, lovely climbers with nice big flowers? It's a warm sheltered corner, but horrible heavy clay soil.

TIA!

What about a honeysuckle? Lonicera Copper Beauty is evergreen and flowers all through the summer.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 01/03/2012 14:03

Ah that looks interesting, thank you. Lonicera was one I'd thought of but could remember the name. Off to the garden centre tomorrow to see what they've got, but thought I'd ask the far more knowledgeable first Grin

This one looks quite interesting as well

Pretty

How about a Trachelospermum
www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/climbers/other-climbers/trachelospermum-jasminoides-/classid.1728/
Evergreenm handsome foliage and lovely scented flowers (also neater/slower grower than the honeysuckles).

I love clem armandii but it can look scrappy as it often loses its leaves on the lower section of the plant, esp in a sunny spot.

Solanum or potato vine.Comes in white and blue variations.I have one of both and they still have their leaves on,although some got a bit singed by the snow/frost.

I second the star jasmine. The foliage is lovely, with red tinges, and the flowers are not large and showy but are pretty and smell divine Smile.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.
I love the star jasmine but we already have 3 other jasmine in the back garden (normal white one, yellow evergreen and one with red flowers)

Good to know about armandii - its a very sunny spot in the middle if summer and I don't want it looking tired. :)

It's really the coverage I'm after, needs to go up the side of the door and over the top of the porch

Star jasmine isnt the same as ordinary jasmine, which has yellow and red flowered forms and isnt evergreen.
Star jasmine is a much neater climber than straight jasmine so woudl be a good choice for the front. You can buy large specimens if you dont want to wait.
The other option for a sunny front wall is a Wisteria, which look stunning in flower and have exotic foilage too.
I think the floribunda form is the nicest as the flowers are much longer, although less scented than sinensis.

Armandii fan here. The flowers are cheerily early and leaves stay beautifully glossy all year round. Mine grows threw a Silver birch in a very sunny spot.

AllPastYears · 02/03/2012 10:57

Pyracantha? I have one either side of my front door, they go up each side and make an arch over the top. Very nice Smile.

Winter flowering Jasmine! The leaves are a beautiful shape and it's nice and full from the ground unlike honeysuckle which can be a bit bare lower down.

SconeInSixtySeconds · 02/03/2012 11:09

Actually, really thinking about it, I would probably grow an evergreen climber and then grow something else through it. That way you get to choose the prettiest leaf/flower combo.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 02/03/2012 12:19

Some brilliant ideas here, thank you. I love the idea of growing something else through an evergreen climber, but I don't think we have the space (very small area between path and wall for planting).

I'm leaning towards star jasmine at the moment.. like I said, we do have 3 of them (well 2 probably, one seems to have had it!) and I do really like them. :)
