Recommend any good low maintenance, child-friendly, evergreen shrubs/plants?

I'm not really a gardener, but our borders (about 2-3 foot wide) are decidedly bare. I don't want to have to frost-protect anything, I just want plants that fill space, look nice, and aren't laden with poisonous berries or spikes. I'm thinking smallish things for the front and some medium-ish things to go behind them and conceal the fence a bit? Where do I start? We're on a clay soil, I think, garden is half shade and half sun. Thanks in advance...

What about a border of lavender and rosemary (both safe for kids and evergreen) and then add some hardy hebes and whilst you are planting it throw in some alium bulbs or other bulbs (check planting times on packet) for an extra splash of colour. I have planted this in front of my kitchen window. It is a great border which can be trimmed with shears at the end on the summer to keep it under control. Hope this helps.

Forgot to add that you could have some climbers at the back, clematis or honeysuckles would be easy. All the plants I have mentioned are surviving in our clay soil. Good luck.

I would recommend some evergreens so you have 'year round interest', as well as some winter flowering. Good low maintenance, attractive shrubs include;

Pittosporum
Daphne
Euonymus
Escallonia
Nandina ( bamboo - obv not the varities people use for growing into high fences)
Spirea

Also second rosemary/lavender. The RHS plant finder tool online is v helpful.

Daphne and Euonymus are toxic, so not my choice for a children's garden if they are young enough to pick and chew without due thought.

True - I've never come across toddlers who go around muching on shrubs, but if yours do, you'll need to choose vair carefully.
