What is the TALLEST thing I can grow in a pot?

This is the scenario:

End of terrace. Neighbour on the other end of terrace, on a corner plot. We have a shared path, but houses are not next to eachother, hers is on a 90 degree angle from mine. So, an L shape.

Neighbour has an annoying habit of opening her kitchen door in the morning, stirring her tea, taking the bag out, then chucking it towards our front door.

There is already a fence, it is 1.80 tall. I will replace the fence, and add 20 cm trellis on top. But it still wont solve the problem. So, I am thinking 5 Ver large pots with something vigorous and tall. At least between 2.5-3 meters.

But what?

Bamboo - needs to be grown in a pot anyway as it will take over the garden

How tall can the tallest bamboo grow?

Can I get away with planting Silver Birch in humongous terracotta pots?

I've got a lovely Elephant Grass. A Miscanthus I believe. It looks like bamboo and can grow up to 12-15 feet in a season. 'They' are looking into growing it for bio-fuel purposes because it grows so fast. It spreads a bit with roots just underground, but unlike bamboo, the roots are soft and easy to cut through and control. Not sure if it likes pots.
The tallest bamboo? I've got some 10 feet high in pots, but it's a fancy type. Get basic green and I'm sure you can go higher.
Could you grow a climber like Russian Vine AKA Mile-A-Minute on 3 metre high 'plant supports'? Not a fence exactly so might be legal.

Wait, is she actually chucking her tea bags at your front door/on to your front garden? That is unbelievably rude. Could you collect them and put them on her kitchen door step so that maybe she would realise. Or perhaps try to intercept her one day and say "oh, i was wondering where all the tea bags were coming from. Could you maybe add them to your compost pile rather than our front garden?" Or if the fence is too high for a friendly chat, just bombard her by throwing used tea bags over the fence when she steps out in the morning.

Or is it just the ritual that you have to watch that is irksome, then screen away. Just make sure whatever you use is evergreen.

Sorry, not much help but that would drive me crazy tbh

No point. She knows she is rude. That is what she intends to be.

I am just glad it is not bags of dog poo, or leftover dinners. If anything, it is an improvement.

DH came out one morning to find carrots and potato peal on his motorbike. Once spaghetti bolognaise. The council says we have no proof it was her. Privacy laws state we can only point cctv on to our private property and not aimed towards public spaces. The motorbike is parked next to the path, on our side. But we cant aim the cctv towards the bike without also pointing it to the path, and this is in breach of HER privacy.

Nothing I can do. The council and the laws protect the asbos. We just have to find ways of dealing with it. Which we have to do before moving back into the house, and before putting it on the market, WITHOUT having to refer to any feuds with neighbours.....

Still no advice, but just to say, I am absolutely appalled for you. Will keep my eyes open for something tall and bushy (and fast growing!) for you though.

OP, I feel your pain, but I'd caution against Russian Vine. Seriously - it's a pest. Not for nothing is it called 'Mile a Minute'.

I'd agree that bamboo is probably a good idea. Good luck!

PrisonerOfWaugh · 13/01/2012 22:44

Quint, that sounds like a horrible thing you have to deal with, on top of everything else!

I can see that engaging might not be a good thing, how frustrating. I take it there is form/reason for this behaviour (don't want to pry).

Bamboo sounds like a good option, maybe stand the pots on sleepers for added height.

How about a fig? They love pots and the tea bags might do them good and you get to eat figs off it tooSmile
