I will never waste my time growing brussel sprouts again.

3 years I've tried.

3 years we've ended up with a small plateful of marble sized sprouts.

Everything eats them Angry. By the time I harvest them they're all nibbled and full of bugs.

Next year I'm sticking with raspberries and spuds.

Sprouts are the work of the devil and not welcome in this house. I'm not doing broccoli again. Or tomatoes.

I've never thought of growing sprouts - do they take up much room? I've given up on tomatoes too and spuds and sweetcorn.

I'm sticking with fruits and salad stuff from now on.

Blackpuddingbertha · 30/12/2011 22:22

Oh yes, don't do spuds anymore either.

What happens to your sweetcorn Lumiya? It's one of my favourites to grow.

I know its not the same but the sprout tops are very good to eat (unless the bugs have eaten them too . . . )

I discovered that growing 'spuds' layered into a large pot is the most successful way of growing them and as the top layer is pulled the next layer grows through. They stay small but the DC love them like that.
I again grow tomatoes in pots and line them against a sunny wall or in those plastic tent glass house which I open completely every day.
I have discovered my garden is to small for courgettes they spread out so much
Is sweetcorn easy to grow? I want to try melon next year

Blackpuddingbertha · 30/12/2011 22:52

Canyou - I've always found sweetcorn easy; they like a rich soil though and if you have squirrels (or deer) you may need to protect them. But they are very worth it - nothing like shop-bought. There are some compact varieties of courgette that don't get quite so huge - have a look for ones advertised as suitable for patios.

My tomatoes and spuds get blight. It's too depressing to try again.

blackpudding I don't think I have a big enough space in a sunny enough spot in my garden to grow sweetcorn. That and DH picking them too early. I think we only managed to eat a couple of ripe cobs all year. A bit of an anticlimax, all in all.

I need to either find a sunnier spot or keep DH hands off my cobs.

Blackpuddingbertha · 30/12/2011 23:04

Ah, yes. May also need protecting from an over-enthusiastic DH. My DH knows he's not allowed in the veg patch unless under strict instruction...

I grew sprouts in the front garden this year, it confused the beasties and the stalks grew to 4ft with only a couple of nibbled ones. I'm rubbish at cabbages thoughGrin
