screening plants

We are overhalling our garden at the moment and are tackling one hurdle at a time. The lastest is we have the side of an ugly house at the bottom of the garden. It is quite close to the boundary so we can't plant any trees to screen it. We have an old dead cherry tree that we coould use as a frame to grow something up - what would be good and bushy and screen-y? We were also thinking of putting some bamboo (in containers!) along there. What else can you lovely folks recommend?

We're using bamboo to screen an overlooking house, but planted in the ground; China Gold and bambusa gracilis. They'll take two years to reach 6 metres, but won't go daft and invade.

We're in Melbourne, but grew bamboo successfully in London.

You need to speak to someone who can get the right bamboo for your climate.
