Planning on ordering LOTS of roses over next few months.

I am a bit of a rose obsessive. Looking for really good scented varieties- particularly David Austin types- and must repeat well.

If you have a lovely rose please tell me about it!

I got this one earlier in the year as it was 1/2 price at the garden centre

Am going to be checking out your choices for further choices!

GlitterKitty · 09/12/2011 22:50

Oooo I looked at that. Do let me know how it is!

I'll put pics of all mine on my profile once they flower!

Now to start choosing cream/apricot/pinks for another area...

Parker's wholesale also do some old varieties which are very affordable. I wish had more spare cash for rose purchase. I really do. I love this thread by the way.
MNHQ could you please try to get us some kind of dealwhich enables me to afford roses again with David Austin? Pretty please?

GlitterKitty · 01/01/2012 19:20

Its time to buy more roses!

Christmas is over and there is no snow- so more bare roota can be ordered!

Bumping this for more recommendations. Def going to put in a blue moon- anyone else got a gorgeous rose to recommend must be scented? Grin

a Climbing iceberg if you've got a wall to cover? I bought ours for £3 from the co-op, it's now 15 foot high and just covered in glorious white flowers. Sadly our house is now rented out but our neighbours send us a picture of the rose every year!

Hi Architien - I will see if we can - any recommendations for roses for totally crap gardeners like MOI?

GlitterKitty · 02/01/2012 20:50

What situation are you planting in, Olivia? You want a climber or a bush? Wild rose looking, or a 'proper' (hybrid tea) rose? Colour/scent important?

I know so many lovely ones, its hard to narrow down-!

Do have a look at David Austins website, gorgeous old fashioned, full scented type roses here

Olivia - Ballerina is bombproof and works in most situations.

And yes please to a MN discount with David Austin or Crocus (although subscribers to Gardeners' World can get a discount at the latter).

I love roses. Had upwards of 30 in our home in the UK and I miss them terribly. Sad

Anyhow. The ones I loved particularly were Rambling Rector - I planted this to climb an old straggly apple tree and it is the most beautiful clouds of flowers. Only flowers once so I'm growing clematis through it as well.

Gentle Hermione -yy - it's lovely, have this and Graham Thomas growing over a rose tunnel. (and clematis).

My favourite scented one is a moss scented one I smelled at Chelsea. Very dark red. Can't remember the name though (helpful).

Queen of Sweden - very straight and tall growth, needs to be back of border IMO.
Grace - gorgeous apricot blooms that last well.
Tess of the D'Urbervilles - not as scented as I'd hoped.

I would defo recommend getting the bareroots from David Austin direct - they establish so much more quickly than the pots from the garden centre, and are quite a lot cheaper!

Plus, if you like growing clematis through (like me) then Aldi often have really good large flowered specimens in the early summer.

ComeIntoTheFestiveGardenMaud · 02/01/2012 22:23

Oh yes to growing clematis through roses (or any other sizeable) shrub! I have Rosa New Dawn and clematis jackmanii grwoing through an apple tree and they look fabulous together. Lidl too have bargain clematis in the spring.

@GlitterKitty

What situation are you planting in, Olivia?
Erm, in the garden? Grin Hmm, perhaps I need my own thread for CLUELESS gardnening novices. Maud will put the request to the powers that be. Happy Rose -Searching all. I shall start me own thread shortly
oldenoughtowearpurple · 03/01/2012 23:28

Souvenir du docteur jamain for me too - it needs a bit of coddling and the individual blooms go over quite quickly but when they are fresh they are sublime and if you keep deadheading them they keep coming. I believe it's monty don's favourite too.

Sophie is like tess but a much better doer - I have one of each. Sophie was still flowering at Christmas, tess gave up in October.

As you have space for lots I love my Leda too: its a lipstick white so the buds have the prettiest little rim of red on them.

GlitterKitty · 04/01/2012 09:15

leda is on my list- that or hebes lip- love the white tipped with red look, purple!

When I was a little girl ( a vair vair long time ago Grin), my mum had a rose called Whisky Mac - beautiful peach colour and a gorgeous scent. It survived Scottish winters for years, but sadly could not survive the dog using it as a pissing post. Sad I might hve to buy one for myself, now you've reminded me...

niminypiminy · 09/01/2012 11:39

I've just bought Francis E Lester, which grew against the house where we used to go for holidays when I was a little girl.

Rambler, single flowers white centred with deep pink edges, golden stamens, gorgeous scent.

Busyoldfool · 29/01/2012 20:05

No one mentioned Compassion - a climber, pinkish tinged with peachey colour. Lovely scent. Zephirinedrouhine - was pleased to see this one mentioned as we also had it in our garden when I was a child and it is absolutely gorgeous! So many blooms tumbling along the fence! Thank you for the happy reminder.

teta · 30/01/2012 19:51

A Handel climbing rose from Dobbies. It was the only climbing rose they had left.i think i planted it in May/June.Its pure cream on the inside and the unopened buds have a deep pink covering. Its also really strongly scented and smells beautiful in a vase.It has flowered continually and is still flowering at the moment with 12 buds ,3 of which are open. The connundrum is do i cut off the buds tonight?, as we are due a strong frost apparently-or do i leave for possible further flowering. Its on a south facing patio wall so is relatively well protected.

rhihaf · 28/02/2014 14:06

I know this is an old thread, but I have just come from Aldi where they have roses for £1.89!!! They had floribunda, hybrid teas, climbing and shrub, all grown in UK and looking pretty healthy.
I bought 10. Blush
Can't remember the names, but I know one of them was Blue Moon and another Little Miss.
