Wanted: short, low hedge- lonicera?

Presumably grows much faster than box!

Any other suggestions?

I want it to be maybe 50cms high and 100cm long, max, as a small wind break.

We have lonicera hedges in placeas around our garden and yes they do grow quickly, but always look a bit untidy as they can sprawl all over the place. Once cut they look fine, but not for long! What about Yew, apparently faster growing than people think, and evergreen. We also have laurel, which grows really well as a screen, but that would be too tall for what you need maybe.

Another question: which hedging shrub is it that only has greenery on the growing tip? So when you prune it you can leave an unsightly dark hole (like fir trees do!). There's a lot of that around our estate.

Hmm, have to think about that one, might be a cypress type. Privet's another good one but a bit boring. Yew is a bit slow, and bigger plants would be more expensive, but the gardening progs all say it's not a slow as people think.

Other evergreen hedge plants are Escallonia, which has flowers and is okay after clipping (no holes) can get between 4 -8 ft, and holly. Deciduous ones, which may not be so good for a windbreak in winter, include berberis thumbergii, only needs one clip per year, 2 -4 ft and has flowers and some have nice red/plum foliage, but prickly. Can have berries which might not be good if you hve small children. Beech makes a lovely hedge and keeps its brown leaves on over winter until the new ones come. We had one of those at our other house and it grew very quickly.
