Can I put rhubarb leaves on the compost heap?

We have some rather rampant rhubarb, so I'm giving lots of trimmed stems away to friends and neighbours. But the title says it all really, can I put the leaves on the compost?
I know they're poisonous to humans, but are they ok for other plants?

no, apparently you can't put them on the compost heap, from what i have read.

I do. Think it's fine.

Hassled · 17/05/2011 22:28

I read/heard/thought they were very good as compost. I certainly compost mine and all seems fine.

'Tis fine.

slartybartfast · 18/05/2011 09:55

re- encouraging rhubarb to grow, can you put a bucket on it, force it so to speak?

I remember buying a rhubarb crown years ago (never came to anything :( ) DS was about 3/4 and friend watching me plant it said "Don't let ds eat the leaves thy're really poisonous and ds was all Hmm why would I want to eat the leaves ????

Just remember it really making me laugh Grin

I digress...

:)

MissFenella · 21/05/2011 00:05

Yea - it helps to shred them a bit but don't make tea from them!

TeamLemon · 21/05/2011 06:39

Mspontipine, I didn't buy this rhubarb. It has inherited.
When we moved into this house we discover the previous weirdos inhabitants had made a small circular brick lined bed in the middle of the lawn, planted with said rhubarb and violets.
We transplanted the rhubarb, and 5 years later we are still battling the violets that invade the lawn!

I soooo wish I could inherit some!! I love it but my crown was unsuccessful and gave up!! I only have a tiny bit of bed so probably wouldn't have worked anyway - think the size of two pillow cases at best!! I have heard some grow it in pots - I may try again one day :)
