Planting food in communal courtyard

Hi there. I'm new to planting, live in a townhouse that has a courtyard which is communal and is also a walkway for public use and I have a 3 year old and baby (not ideal!).

Anyway my 3 year old is now very enthusiastic about his 'garden'. The beds are not very deep or wide.

Here is how everything is going:

  1. Two pea plants have germinated and are now just visible. They are in a fairly dark part of the courtyard (it gets sun in the morning and daffodils grow well there)
  2. The lettuces are very limp looking (I bought plugs)
  3. The flower bulbs (can't remember the names) are coming on very well
  4. Chives are in a pot on the balcony - it's a very exposed part. They don't seem to be thriving
  5. I have planted carrot seeds (about 4 seeds in one spot) in a very deep pot
  6. Fuscia plants are completely bare (don't know if these will ever come back to life)
  7. Rocket is on the windowsill in a very shallow tupperware container. It was very slow but there are plenty of leaves now
  8. Basil is going strong on the windowsill

Any advice very welcome. I'd love to plant more and fix any of the problems above

Peas would probably like more sun but not much you can do about that
Water the lettuce - you have moved it on to bigger pots haven't you?
Chives are tough so should be ok. They should get taller and thicker but not necessarily more stalks this year. Are you watering them? Have they got enough space in the pot?
Chuck the fuschia and buy new
Does the rocket container have holes in the bottom?

I've put the lettuce into the ground and it's very hot on them at the moment. I'm not sure that they have enough space. Should I move them to a bed?

Pity about the fuschia.

The rocket container has no holes. Should I put some in?

Can I move the peas? Is it too risky?

Sorry when I said 'I'm not sure they have enough space' I meant the chives!
