Has anyone else lost anything. I planted an escallonia hedge in October. 40 shrubs, and only 9 appear to have survived Sad I am hoping a few more might come back in the next few weeks but its probably not going to happen is it?

My standard bays are dead, as are the blueberries. In fact anything that was in a pot.

Newly planted shrubs seem to have been hit hard. Sorry to hear about your hedge, a lot of work and expense to loose.

Are they definitely dead? My friend thought her hornbeam hedge was a goner, but I checked them and 99% are still living.Have you tried scratching the wood with a fingernail to see if it is still green underneath?

My blueberries - in pots - survived, but all the hedges around here (W Scotland) are looking ropy. The privets, which usually stay green, have all lost their leaves, but I think they'll come back eventually, so do check. I lost a couple of azaleas in half barrels. Well, they are still alive, but looking really rubbish and one of them is definitely on its way out. I may try to salvage the other one.

Otherwise, I'm surprised how much has survived - the epimediums I thought were dead because they lost all their leaves have both come back, all the shrubs. The flowering currants are all looking particularly lovely at the moment - better than usual, I think.

One of my standard Bays is looking very sorry for itself, the leaves are slowly turning brown, funny as the other one is fine and this only started about 6 weeks ago, I fear I may lose it soonSad
Most of my french lavender plants, myrtle shrub, evergreen ferns, pyracantha, euphorbia, a hardy fuchsia bush, and all of my winter pansies have gone! I really hope we don't have another winter like the last two, I've had more than enough!!!

On the plus side my strawberry plants that I forgot to fleece are now flourishing, and the rhubarb has never looked so good!

Melina, are your evergreen ferns definitely dead? Several of mine have lost their fronds, but are all coming back to life now with new growth. There is little in life that I like better than an unfurling fern.

MelinaM · 11/04/2011 20:06

I think so, the foliage has gone completely brown and crunchy, but I'll hang on to them a while longer and hopefully some new growth will appear soonSmile I love unfurling ferns too, my tree fern is just springing into life, it's wonderful to watch ..and to touch tooGrin x

It all seems very dry and brown. But I will live in hope

Tis all that we can do!!! I fear my Bay has definitely had it though, a trip to the local nursery is on the cards me thinks!
