Grass type under a big tree?

We need to do our lawn again and this time I want to make sure we get it right.
What type of grass do I need for near a big oak tree? I have had mixed feedbck on advice-some say i will never get good grass and others have told me I need grass for shady areas.
Can anyone advice?

In my experience bark chippings work best I'm afraid

Sorry. You probably need to look into some other sort of ground cover if you mean right under the tree. Creeping comfrey/woodlandy flowers?

I always wonder why the grass is always in such good nick under the trees in the parks?

If the area is totally shaded and dry then grass won't grow. If there is still a bit of light and rainfall under there when the tree is in leaf then you can try a shade mix grass seed from the garden centre. Around large trees it is nice to put some spring bulbs (crocus, fritillaria) with the grass and leave the grass unmown until the leaves are dying back. Another tip is that leaving the grass longer around the tree also helps as longer grass retains moisture better.
