Ideas on what to plant under a hedge/ground cover

From thread title you will gather I am very new to this gardening lark.
Have a beech hedge which runs the boundary on one side of the garden with a border area underneath.Last year DS and I planted aome mixed wild flowers not a great success -previous years we tried nastursiums which looked fab but were eaten by snails.

The boundary also forms the side of our drive so essentially I am wondering what will thrive in the border area look attractive and provide some ground cover-

Any suggestions ? the area is approx 25 metres long and approx a metre wide obviously shaded on one side by the hedge.

Dig in some mulch - the hedge will be taking most of the nutrients from the ground. I don't know how much light it gets but vinca is pretty sturdy and does okay in most conditions. If it's very shady, try epimedium instead. Don't plant anything closer than a foot from the hedge - there will be a rain shadow there.

If it's fairly wide and gets decent light, once you've mulched it you could put in alchemilla mollis and/or heuchera

I have wild violets in the spring, and cistus, vinca and summer snowflakes with some other bulbs that I can't remember. Plus marjoram, oregano and prostrate rosemary.
Yes to mulch.

Vinca/Periwinkle - gives excellent ground cover, attractive and evergreen, (some are variegated) hardy, flowers and speads quite quickly but can be controlled.

And low maintenance.
