broad beans - how tall?

hello all you experts! I have done a bit of veggie planting in the past but this year it has got serious as a neighbour is lending me her large raised bed...so am planning to get a bit more organised as to what I plant so that I can grow as much as possible over the next few months

My neighbour loves broad beans and so, whilst I am not a massive fan, am going to grow some for her... but...I just assumed that they grew up a bamboo wigwam like runner beans but having read the back of the packet of seeds am not so sure. They don't specifically state that they are a dwarf type but there is no mention of training up bamboo. How tall do "normal" broad beans get and do I just stake up a mid size bamboo or do I need a complete 8ft thingy?

hope you can help...thanks!!

Mine went up to waist height and they weren't dwarf, you need to plant in double rows see link to BBC Gardening below. They are not trained just supported . They do have a lovely flower but if it is windy they can bend over.

brillinat...thanks highriggs. Just what I needed to know! Now all I need to do is find a way to stop the cats scratching up everything in sight! cheers...

You can get dwarf varieties which need no support.

Broad beans picked young and fried off with butter and garlic are delicious!
