...here's the hitch, it's got to flower/survive in Scotland.

With some friends, I want to buy a thoughtful gift for the mum of one of our colleagues who sadly passed away at this time last year.

We were going to send his mum a nice bouquet of flowers, but as she loves her garden so much, we thought it would be nice to actually buy a plant which flowers at this time of year.

Only problem is, we're all clueless when it comes to plants!!

Can any of you give some advice on what will be lovely and appropriate?

thx in advance!

You could try looking at the Hellebore family there are some lovely ones if she has a woodland / shady area to plant them in. I'm in Scotland and mine are lovely at the moment.

camellia's are nice and flower at this time of year - they need acidic soil though. do you know what sort of soil she has in her garden and the situation? how big is garden?

they had some lovely herb baskets in the garden centre - does she cook as well?

Magnolia Stellata
Prunus Kojo No Mai ( I have this, its small but lovely )
Azalea ( late April/Early May ) need ericaceous soil - we grow in pots
Climbers - some Clematis eg alpina/macropetala
