My seeds are growing - ridiculously happy

Okay, I know that seeds are meant to grow, that's what they do but I have never grown anything before (although I have helped several plants along to an early grave) and I am stupidly excited about my little seedlings Grin. I have beetroot, peas, tomatoes and pak choi growing happily on my windowsill and my caulis and peppers are just showing a tiny bit of green. I know that I can grow some of them straight outside when the weather is a bit better but I thought I'd start some inside too and have an extra chance to get plants surviving through until picking time (following my dad's wise advice!).

I have never tried to grow veggies before but my dad growing his own veggies about 10 years ago and the food straight from the garden always tastes amazing - plus my DD loves 'helping' grandad in his garden - so I thought we'd give it a go this year. I'm also giving courgettes, broccoli, squash, potatoes, lettuce, strawberries and blueberries a go - all our favourites!

I've just made everyone come in the kitchen to see my first seeds coming up! Planted loads in the new greenhouse this weekend too, so I'll be very excited when they start sprouting.

I read somewhere that they don't like being watered with rain water and that can make them go all straggly and rot off at the bottom of their stems, might that be what happened Littleducks? I stuck some of mine out in one of those plastic greenhouses too early, from being on the windowsill and lost them all last year too Sad. Love coming home from work in the summer and wandering round to see what's happening to all the plants, bring it on!

Uh-oh, I've planted Brocolli, beetroot, carrot, cauliflower and onions directly in the veg bed.....

you'll need to cover them at night.
It's not hard - get some plastic sheeting and put it over the gorund.
If the seedlings are alreadfy showing, then make a make-shift cold frame from a cardboard box, bbottom cut out and clear plastic replacing it.
most of those in your list are quite hardy, but tehy will still need a bit of help at night when it's frosty.

Daz - that might be an old wives' tale.
they don't like to be too wet, but it doesn't matter what kind of water.

Oh really nickelb? That would be good, I've got loads of rainwater in a butt, seems a pain going to get it out of the tap instead, thanks!
