New patio - what colour?

We are having a new patio. It's a massive area and involves a lot of levelling so need a digger etc etc. However, I'm not 100% sure about the colour of the slabs. They will be Indian sandstone and I was thinking of grey with charcoal brick edging. I've got the idea (from who knows where)that grey is the most natural colour rather than a sandy/ buff colour and that also grey doesnt discolour so much. However, even the man who's fitting it says he wouldnt choose grey!!! Thanks for any advice

Rara

We extended our patio last year and replaced all the slabs. I wanted grey and DP wanted [forget the name- York something-or-other] a yellowish sort of colour.

When we saw the slabs in the garden centre they had been weathered 'yellow' and looked 'okay'.

When they arrived I hated them, they were bright yellow and still are.

Yuck. Wish we had gone for grey, it would have looked far more natural.

Suncottage - thanks for that but sorry to hear about your colour choice, hopefully over time they will weather and fade. I'm off to see a friend's patio which I think is grey and is a fair size so it will be better than just looking at one slab at the builders merchants (I hope)Cant believe we are spending so much money and dont have a clear idea of what it will look like, bit like buying a new car from a brochure and not being able to test drive it. I'm sure it'll be fine...seem to spend my life saying that since I had kids!

What colour are the house walls? Ours are yellow London stock brick and I'm planning on having slate or grey slabs, as I think a contrast will be better than a near-miss with sandstone.

It's a detached house built in 1930 top half is rendered and painted white, bottom half is red brick I guess but obviously weathered over time so I think grey more than sand. We have close-borded fences all round and the one fitted 6 years ago is starting to look a grey colour so the other 3 sides will go that way in time. I'm still keen on grey unless I get totally knocked out by something different and doubtless more expensive!
