Are honey bees usually active this early in the year?

Just curious. Thought there'd probably be some experts on here. I was out walking yesterday and heard lots of bees. They were honey bees collecting pollen from alder catkins on just one tree. It was too sunny to see where they were going to once fully loaded.

It was lovely to see them, but I had never noticed them before at this time of year (but then this is my first Spring wandering around the woods with a baby - beats working!).

Is this usual behavior? There can't be much food around for them.

i dont think they are usually active this early but I'm no expert. I'm posting this because funnily enough I saw one in my garden on Friday - it was investigating my mini irises. A bit early, I thought!
