Growing seeds, mould on top????

First time here so feel free to LYAO at me.

I planted seeds in a tray (stocks) and the bloke at the garden centre said to put the tray in a polythene bag. I didn't have a clear one so improvised with cling film. That was 10 days ago. I left it on my kit hen window sill. There now appears to be white fluff, I think it's mould. What do I do? Have I buggered this up completely?

God alone knows!! But I did cress with the lo's a few weeks ago...and only 5 of the million things sprouted!

Think there is a 'optimum' temp when it comes to seedlings...? Stick it out for the recommended germination period then take stock...(joke) of the situ!

Good luck!

It said 15-20C so it should be perfect on the kitchen window sill, plus plenty of light. Germination said 7-21 days on the packet Confused

Maybe it needed a bit more ventilation?? As in the plastic was too close to the surface..see if you can raise the lid a bit to give it some more air???

Ahh will try lifting the cling film a bit, or is it too late?

Water a bit less and sprinkle cinnamon on the surface of the compost.

Cinnamon? Really? Sorry I am a complete dunce at plants, can you explain why? Thanks.

Apparently it's an anti-fungal. Haven't tried it myself though.:)

My stock seedling appeared after 2 days so definitely should have put in an appearance by now.

It does sound like you need more air circulating. Can you buy a cheap seed tray and lid and start again? (Mine cost about £3)

chocoholic · 16/02/2011 22:29

lol, stock seedlings.
One would be a bit rubbish. Grin

Kryshees · 16/02/2011 22:38

titters @choco!

I didn't know about the cinnamon trick, ooo

I KNOW!!!!!

i am also incredibly new to this and know nothing!
i bought a lovely pot of wild flowers from morrisons which came with lid and after a few days they had mould.

iv since discovered that we're supposed to cover them only until they start to grow. as you see the seedlings, remove the lid!

I am now trying this theory with tomato and radish seeds so good luck to us both!

P.S. i think once the mould is there, bin them!
