Keep an eye out for local church bazaars and table top sales.

I find they are way cheaper, grown locally so no climate adjustments needed and often the person who grew them is on hand to give you any tips/info on them

i heard that buying like that can be a bad idea, as it can introduce 'illness' to the rest of your plants. casue they might have disease in their gardens.

Well, that can be a risk, I suppose but that could go for any suppliers.

The most damaging 'disease' I suppose could be blight, but once that's in the air locally, everyone is at risk of it.

I think it is more an issue with barassicas and club root, not sure why. Most of the plant sales round here are May and it's generally too early for blight.

Most of mine are grown from seed but I do pick up some from Church sales and the Market etc. I got my Sungold tomatoes in Wilkinson's last year, half price so about 64p and there was an extra seedling. They looked rubbish but perked up when potted on and much less than a pack of the seeds.

If you are prepared to pay, have a look at Rocket Gardens, they are very good.

If you have a local allotment site they may have plant sales to raise funds. We sell off excess seedlings and it's a great way to get some expert advice too

Franticfurball - can I be really, really, really, really, really cheeky? and say your name is too much like mine - any chance you could change it?

I know that is a rude request, but folk may get is confused. Smile

FFb, do they have allotment associations? so i could contact local ones?

I've just ordered some veg plants from sarahraven's website. I always trust her stuff. If not then like Glynnis says roadside stall and car boot sales are always good but varieties are normally limited to the cheap and cheerful rather than the tastiest and most productive hence buying mine online this year.

good old garden centres!!!
not homebase or b&q as they dont bring the plants on properly and so they die quickly. garden centres plants are much hardier!
