I'm looking for a tree...

We want a tree for our front garden. It will be planted in a quarter circle bed (is that a quadrant?) with a low fence on one side and a low wall on the other. We want something that gives some interest for as much of the year as possible and don't want it to grow too big - say 3m or so. Perhaps a shrub would be better.

I've looked at the Crocus site but nothing fits the bill. Are there other websites I can search on?

BBC gardening website has come up with excellent suggestions for our garden in the past.
Hope you find something.

Have you looked at Amelanchiers? They have lovely blossom and foliage, and berries in the autumn. Great autumn leaves too, and they stay small. Try Amelanchier grandiflora ballerina.

I'd second an amelanchier but you could also try a small ornamental crab apple. They have lovely blossom and there are loads of different varieties, some lovely coloured foliage and fruits, on dwarf rootstock so you know it will stay pretty tiny.

I'd go for a crab apple they are very pretty in spring and you can make jam.

There are lots of fruit trees on dwarf rootstock on crocus. How about a Victoria plum? Or a small apple tree?

Thanks for the recommendations. The amelanchier looks great. I'm not over keen on fruit trees though - too much picking up of rotting fruit for my liking Confused

I'm not sure about the size or the exact name but I bought a Rowan many years ago. It's leaves had a lovely lacy look and they turned red in Autumn. It then developed red berries for the winter months.

A weeping ornamental cherry tree is also a lovely tree.

Malus (Evereste I think) has white/pinkish blossom in spring and really nice reddish crab apples that stay on the tree a long way through the winter (presume they're not so attractive to the birds). I planted one in the front of my old house 13 or so years ago and I still drive past to see how it is. Doesn't grow too big.

PS I've had an amalanchier too but the Malus has better all year interest and a better shape I think. The amalanchier flowers very briefly and is then a bit boring.
