Toolate/frosty to plant trees now?

Would it be better to wait until spring before buying/planting trees in the garden - fairly mature trees?

I'm not sure if the frost would stop them establishing so well now??

No, you should plant them during the dormant season, so anytime from Nov till about March.

Winter when they are dormant is absolutely the right time.

Just give them a bit of support in case of winter gales, if it is an exposed place.

Silly question - but, would the same principle apply to climbing plants too like mature wisteria - ie they won't die in the frost - or do these need to be planted at a different time of yr?

Basically, the rule is that bare root plants should go in during the dormant period, whereas pot-grown plants can go in at any time. Trees, fruit bushes, hedging etc generally go in in winter. A wisteria would be fine to go in now as well.

I was wondering about doing this too - we're looking to get a Japanese maple and was hoping to plant it now.. frost won't kill off a small one (about 3' tall), will it?
