My mum's top tip for gardening gloves

after years of getting sopping wet and cold hands trying to do the gardening with proper gardening gloves I have finally adopted my mum's approach: normal pair of knitted gloves and a pair of large marigolds over the top, they are warm, waterproof and have excellent grip. Obviously i'll need to wear something thicker when tackling spiky stuff but they seem to be working really well

What a brilliant idea - will give it a try.

very good tip ! I find most gardening gloves too clumsy so I use thin hairdressing rubber gloves in the summer....side bonus that you look like you're forensics so people don't keep stopping to chat to you :O

Fab idea! In summer I also use thin latex gloves (you can buy a box of 20 from the £ shop) but need something warmer for winter... will definitely try that. Thank you!

When tackling brambles I wear 3 layers;1. thin cotton gloves (you can get them in chemists) 2. marigolds 3. heavy duty garden gloves. They almost always stop the prickles!!

I wear these.

They cope with most jobs except the worst thorns.

Then I have a pair of heavy duty chemical gauntlets for serious manure-handling!

Wristwarmers! Lets you wear thinner gloves for more dexterity without losing heat. Any old sweatbands or chopped-off cuffs from raggy jumpers does the trick
