Frost...

Please excuse my ignorance - I come from the Southern hemisphere and have never had a garden in England before...

If the grass was frozen this morning, does that count as "the first frost"? And if so, are all my plants going to die because I haven't yet done all the mulching and protection I was planning to do around the bases of my pots etc? Also, does it matter that I have not yet finished planting all my bulbs?

Hi - yes, this is the first frost. I don't know the answer about your pots as it depends on what plants you have in them Smile

Don't worry about the bulbs - so long as you get them planted this year they will be fine and come up in the spring.

Thanks OhWesternWind.

Well, I've got some roses and a few other bits and pieces. I do have a small geberer I was planning to repot and bring inside. I would have done it on the weekend but it started to rain before I got to it so I dashed inside and didn't get to it. So I have my doubts about his survival. Sad

I also put my peppers out a few weeks ago and have been planning to cut them back and then put them in the shed. So I have my doubts about their survival too. But they are close to the house so perhaps protected a bit.

Peppers are not frost-hardy - a light frost will kill them - they will not even survive in an unheated greenhouse - get them to a windowsill inside asap. Smile

Darn it.

I am out of windowsil space. My shed has lots of windows and does get whatever sun there is. I'll have to hope for the best.

You can buy horticultural fleece which will help protect your plants when they're in the shed.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Can you believe I forgot to go fetch the geberera? Poor little bugger is doomed.
