Turning old pond into bog garden - will this work?

We've inherited a small pond that we didn't want to have due to DCs. DH emptied it out this weekend. I had one of those solid plastic liners that DH couldn't remove so he drilled holes in it and has put lots of large gravel in. I think I might aim to make it a bog garden since I guess it will remain quite damp due to liner.

How do I go about making this work. It currently has a Eucalyptus on the south side and a fence on the west so it will be quite shady.

Any thoughts?

How deep will the soil be above the gravel? If it's too shallow it won't stay damp. If it's nice and deep then it should work great.

If it's big enough I would put in a Gunnera because I love them (like a huge rhubarb); damp shade is lovely to garden - all those ferns and hostas and lush green stuff. I am jealous.

The soil will be about a foot deep.

Not sure I fancy the weeding though.
